Internet Identity Theft is a Growing Concern in America Today

Internet identity theft is a rapidly growing threat to the many people that utilize the internet everyday. Businesses, business people, housewives, employees, students and anyone else that uses the internet is at risk for this highly profitable crime wave that is spreading across the internet.

The definition of internet identity theft is the act of an unauthorized individually wrongfully accesses another person's data and account numbers to obtain personal information for fraudulent purposes.

The Motivator for the Internet Identity Thief

The driving motivator for criminals that specialize in the internet identity theft is the ease in which they can rapidly gain access to bank accounts, credit card companies and other financially profitable accounts by simply tricking the people the meet or by using computer designed worms and viruses to transfer confidential information as they come across it.

For many thieves, their credit rating is less than perfect, so the use of someone else's credit allows them to create new credit card accounts, cell phone accounts, bank accounts and other important financial resources that they would otherwise be unable to obtain. In addition, the credit cards allow them to purchase many items that they would otherwise be unable to afford with their own credit limitations. This easy money allows for a quick profit with a lot of perks.

The Hacker Plays An Interesting Role in Internet Identity Theft

Some people, called Hackers, simply enjoy the thrill of accessing documents and records that are considered "secure" by most web sites. Hackers enjoy the thrill of successfully completing an internet identity theft. It is in the gathering of the protected information that provides the challenge and satisfaction for the Hacker. Once they have gotten through the various security programs, the Hacker usually sells the information that they have obtained to a criminal intent on using the information for fraudulent purposes. Hackers are not so much concern with the use of the information they capture but more in the acquisition of it.

Unfortunately, many people do not realize that their accounts have been compromised until it is too late. If you have concerns that your identity has been compromised take the time to review your credit report immediately. Prompt response is of the essence when you are dealing with your personal identity whether on the internet or in your personal records. As with all legal matters, if you find that something looks suspicious, report it to the authorities immediately so that they can begin the investigation. Notify your creditors, banking institute and any other businesses that you conduct business with that you have been a victim of internet identity theft. You may need to cancel all credit cards, bank cards and other types of personal access cards to prevent any further theft under your name.
